about us

Aroostook Right to Read was established in 1978.  It is our mission to promote literacy encompassing reading, writing, and speaking across the curriculum among students, educators, and parents.  Directors work to complete this mission in several ways.  One of these ways is to encourage schools to participate in Reading Awareness activities as part of Reading Across Aroostook week in April.  Students create bookmarks and the winners are then published and shared throughout every school during this week.  We also encourage students to Stop! Drop! And Read! Across Aroostook county schools, where everyone stops what they are doing to read something of their choosing for at least thirty minutes.  Aroostook Right to Read honors young writers in grades four through eight, as they participate in the Young Authors’ Institute, a yearly conference (going on for over 40 years now!) where student writers get to meet a Maine author and participate in a variety of writing workshops.  Finally, AR2R recognizes an Aroostook county educator annually for outstanding work in the field of literacy.
